There was a recent break-in at one of the seasonal cottages in Chalet Hamlet. It appears that nothing was stolen but the intruder might have spent a night inside.
The only damage was a broken window. If you have any information, please contact Constable Darren Moore of the Windsor RCMP at 902.798.2207

Fire Safety

'Sent on behalf of CHPOA Board'

It is fire season in Nova Scotia. Here is a picture from the fire on Saturday in the Chester Basin area which is pretty close to Chalet Hamlet as the crow flies.
There are presently fires burning near Havre Boucher 200 hectares, Springfield 120 hectares, and Argyle 18 hectares so far.

Keep yourself and your community safe. Dispose of wood stove, charcoal bbq ashes, and cigarette butts carefully.
Respect and follow the burn ban.

Evacuation Route

'Sent on behalf of CHPOA Board'

With the onset of summer and the high risk that it brings for forrest fires, its prudent to talk about how we all can get out of the Hamlet if the main road was inaccessible due to a forrest fire.
The attached map photo shows an alternate evacuation route to get out of the Hamlet if our main road was blocked.
The lake in the top of the photo is Little Armstarong Lake and the road (marked in black) is the extension of Armstrong Lake West Road.

This alternate evacuation route would ideally require Off Road Vehicles to move residents out of the Hamlet, however, you can also hike this route if your health permits.
In the coming weeks, it is the boards intention to put together an evacuation plan and post it on Facebook and on the CHPOA website.
Comments and recomendations will be solicited and welcome in order to improve it.

Road Repairs And Grading

'Sent on behalf of CHPOA Board'

The road repairs on the main road and Chalet Drive has been completed.
However, due to various reasons, the brush cutting contractor won't be able to complete the remaining brush cutting until this coming Fall. We will finish it off in the coming Fall along with a Fall grading in the September time frame.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the CHPOA Board.

Brushcutting Update

'Sent on behalf of CHPOA Board'

The brush cutting is complete for this Spring. The board has budgeted for more brushcutting to include all of the areas that have not yet been done.
However, the timings for that work will very much depend on whether we receive our funds in a timely manner this Fall due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The Board's hope is that we will receive our funds on time this coming Fall so we can continue our much needed work.

As we are all well aware, grading is a priority for our roads and the Board will make a post as soon as we know when grading can start.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the CHPOA Board.

Message To Community

Dear Chalet Hamlet residents: I hope you are all well and keeping safe during this difficult time.
Our Board would like to offer reassurance that we are continuing our work in spite of these challenging times.
We are learning to 'Zoom' for our executive meetings!

We've accomplished a lot over the last year.

Roads
Last year, we were able to grade the road in the Spring and in the Fall.
The Fall grading was provided by Westfor, the company responsible for managing logging in this part of the province. Westfor also provided for brush cutting to ensure safety along Armstrong Lake East and resurfaced the bridge at no cost to Chalet Hamlet. To supplement that, the Association paid for brush cutting the remaining section of Armstrong Lake East and Pinehill. We have deposited gravel at various locations in the Hamlet for the use of residents on road potholes.
The Road Committee also managed repair work on Pinehill and along Armstrong Lake East where a settling pond needed to be created to prevent water from washing out the road. We also replaced the culvert across the bottom of Forest Heights at Armstrong Lake East.

This year, we are planning a full grading in the coming weeks. Our goal is to have it done before the long weekend in May. The Roads Committee will continue to monitor the roads and address issues as they arise. We are also planning brush cutting the loop along Chalet Drive, Hamlet Crescent, Armstrong Lake West, and Forest Heights this spring.
Stop signs will be installed at the intersection of Chalet Drive and Forest Heights, as well as at the intersection of Forest Heights and Armstrong Lake East.

Social
We had three well-attended social events this winter – Wreathmaking, Christmas tree lighting, and Winterfest.

We had hoped to plan a number of events for the community to gather this summer but given the current public health directives we have postponed all event planning.

Environment
We hope to be able continue to monitor our lakes this summer in an attempt to identify any potential problems early. This will depend on whether tests can be processed at the Nova Scotia Health Authority Environmental Services lab.

Garbage Area
You may have noticed more than normal amounts of garbage in the garbage area. We are continuing to work with the Municipality to keep the garbage area tidy and clean.

Annual General Meeting ['AGM']
We are planning to hold our AGM this July as usual. It is likely that we will need to hold this meeting virtually and we are exploring best options for our community meeting.

We are all so very fortunate to own property in the Hamlet. I encourage you to be kind and respectful to your neighbours and others you might encounter in the Hamlet in the coming weeks.
Stay safe, Chalet Hamlet Board

Gravel For Potholes

It's the time of year again when wet weather becomes more prevalent and more potholes start to appear within the Hamlet. In keeping with our discussions at the AGM in July, we are placing gravel in various locations within the Hamlet again this year.
This gravel will be placed for property owners to use, if they feel inclined, to fill some pot holes on the roads in front of their properties.
This gravel is not intended for personal use but rather for the benefit of the roads we all travel on.
The locations that currently have gravel are:

  • Chalet Drive, next to the CHPOA Lake Access
  • Armstrong Lake East, near civic address 311
  • Middle Lake North Road, near civic address 24
  • Armstrong Lake East Road/Middle Lake South Road; coming soon
  • Armstrong Lake East Road/Pine Point Drive; coming soon

All locations will be marked with flaging tape. The last two locations will have gravel deposited in the next few days.
A huge thank you to Kim for all the help you provided today.

Middle Lake Unsafe For Swimming

Middle Lake continues to be considered unsafe for swimming due to high e. Coli counts.
The water was re-tested on August 21st, and the average from five samples was 342 /100ml.
The upper limit for safe swimming is 200 /100ml.
The most recent test result for Armstrong Lake was 1 /100ml, which is well within the range for safe swimming.

In the meantime, if there are any questions or concerns, please contact the CHPOA Board.
